CAIRO: The Egyptian Center for Women's Rights expresses its great concern about the incidents that happened in Tahrir Square on the dawn of Saturday, which according to the Ministry of Health resulted in the death of people and the injuries of 71 persons. The Egyptian Center for Women's Rights condemns the overuse of force by the forces of the Egyptian Army against the people who sit-in, and it condemns the use of live bullets against civilians who are not armed. Although ECWR appreciates the role of the armed forces in securing the safety and stability of Egypt in this critical situation, it demands that there be an immediate investigation on the death and injury of people in the Square. ECWR stresses that respecting the law and its application does not justify the overuse of force. ECWR calls for: - Permitting freedom of speech and peaceful demonstrations. The Armed Forces should preserve the security in Egypt and should respect the freedom of demonstrations. - The immediate release of all female and male detainees who have been arrested yesterday morning in Tahrir Square. - The necessity to open investigation related to what happened in Tahrir Square, and the killing of demonstrators that has been witnessed in the Square. ** ECWR is a registered NGO and has special consultative status with the United Nations.
