CAIRO: The first American official to visit Egypt since the resignation of former president Hosni Mubarak arrived in Egypt on Monday. William Burns, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, is on a three-day visit and is set to meet with members of the Supreme Military Council, Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, and a number of representatives of the January 25 uprising. Burns declared that the U.S. is willing to provide the required assistance to Egypt during the next phase of the revolution. He urged Egypt to build confidence in its transition to democracy by lifting the emergency law and releasing more political detainees. On the same day, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron arrived unannounced in Cairo to urge the transition to democracy. It is the first visit to Egypt by a western leader since the fall of 30-year president Hosni Mubarak. Tuesday, the European Union's foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton, will arrive in Egypt and will hold talks with several officials. BM
