Israel has put its embassies on high alert, fearing they could come under attack, after identifying “suspicious activities” around some of them, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday. “Unusual occurrences have been identified recently around a few Israeli missions abroad. Our assessment, at this point, is that these sites are under threat, and this is being taken care of,” the ministry said in a statement. “The relevant Israeli authorities are in touch with relevant authorities in the countries concerned,” it added, without revealing which locations had been flagged. The warnings come after Israel's anti-terrorism bureau on Friday warned against travel to Egypt and 8 other countries for fear of reprisal attacks on the anniversary of the assassination of two top Hezbollah combatants. It said there was an increased threat of attacks against Israelis and Jewish targets in Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania and Venezuela. Top Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh was killed in a car bombing in Damascus on February 12, 2008, while Abbas Mussawi, the group's secretary general, was killed by an Israeli missile on February 16, 1992.
