Nigeria's telecom giant Bharti Airtel adopted a primary school in Nigeria in an effort to help develop and grow information technology education in the country. The company said in a press statement on Monday that the aim is to buttress education as part of the newly launched education initiative. The company launched its ‘Adopt a School' program by adopting Oremeji Primary School 2 at Ajegunle in the country's commercial capital, Lagos. Airtel Nigeria said it will build an ultra-modern six classroom block at the school in Ajegunle as part of its “social responsibility scheme,” Rajan Swaroop, chief executive of the company in Nigeria, said. The school will also have an office for the head teacher and water borehole with lavatory facilities for the boys and girls as well as male and female teachers, he said. “The company will also provide school uniforms, furniture, books and school bags for the children,” he continued. Swaroop said that the company would continue to support the government in achieving its objectives in the area of education. “We have not just come to build a structure and go away, but we will continue to support the adopted schools on a long-term basis, he said. “I hope the project would add value to the lives of the children of Ajegunle,” he added.
