CAIRO: 52 Egyptian fishermen have been arrested by Libyan authorities, a senior Egyptian official said on Tuesday. Their boats were seized and Egypt is negotiating their release, the official added. The fishermen were detained on Sunday for “illegal entry and fishing in Libyan territorial waters,” Mohammed Abdel Hakam, Egypt's Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs, told MENA, Egypt's official news agency. MENA reported that the Libyan coast guards took the three seized fishing boats and their occupants to Benghazi. Egypt's consul in Benghazi has visited the detained fishermen, and Cairo has made diplomatic contact with Libyan authorities to secure the release of the fishermen and spare them a trial, according to Hakam, BM
