Humane Society Sues Perdue Farms Over Humane Chicken Treatment Perdue Farms, the nation's third largest poultry producer got to enjoy a special Monday morning delivery. A class action lawsuit from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) for allegedly marketing factory farmed chicken products as “humane.” The bigger question may not be whether Perdue treats its chickens in a human way. It may be does the current letter of the law allow them to use the word humane to refer to practices that, clearly, are not. The class action lawsuit in specific refers to the “humanely raised” label on the “Heartland” and Perdue” branded products. The HSUS filed the lawsuit on behalf of all duped consumers (though we may say that people should know by now that grocery store meat does not include humane treatment) and is seeking a jury trial, compensation for class members and injunctive relief against further use of the “Humanely Raised” claim.
