San Diego Cats killed with antifreeze
An East County animal rights group claims someone at a local hotel is poisoning cats with anti-freeze.
Members of the East County Animal Rescue Group claim nine bowls of anti-freeze were left on the property of the Budget Inn on Main Street in El Cajon.
Animal control officers did find two or three bowls with traces of anti-freeze, said El Cajon police Sgt. Steve Kirk.
Humane Society Sues Perdue Farms Over Humane Chicken Treatment
Perdue Farms, the nation's third largest poultry producer got to enjoy a special Monday morning delivery. A class action lawsuit from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) for allegedly marketing factory farmed chicken products as “humane.” The bigger question may not be whether Perdue treats its chickens in a human way. It may be does the current letter of the law allow them to use the word humane to refer to practices that, clearly, are not. The class action lawsuit in specific refers to the “humanely raised” label on the “Heartland” and Perdue” branded products.
The HSUS filed the lawsuit on behalf of all duped consumers (though we may say that people should know by now that grocery store meat does not include humane treatment) and is seeking a jury trial, compensation for class members and injunctive relief against further use of the “Humanely Raised” claim.
Animal rights campaigners call for gov't ban on seal oil
Animal rights activists yesterday demanded the government ban the import and sale of seal oil in Taiwan to protect the marine mammal.
Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of the Canada chapter of Humane Society International, noted at a press conference in Taipei that the United States, European Union, Mexico and Croatia have all banned imports of seal oil.
Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of the Canada chapter of Humane Society International, noted at a press conference in Taipei that the United States, European Union, Mexico and Croatia have all banned imports of seal oil.
With Canada's annual seal hunt set to kick off in four months, Taiwan would contribute to stopping the slaughter by imposing a similar ban, Aldworth said.
PETA's offer to help with the Kansas budget woes
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) made an offer to Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson to help with the state's budget problems and put some extra cash in the coffers.
The animal rights organization offered to pay the state (the exact amount was not disclosed) to erect an anti-fishing sign at Miami State Fishing Lake in Fontana. PETA offered to pay rent for the sign as long as it stayed up.
German Zoo staff conviction upheld for culling hybrid tigers
A German court Monday upheld an earlier verdict which found a German zoo director and three of his staff guilty of cruelty in the killing of three newborn tiger cubs.
As part of a program to protect the world stock of Siberian tigers, the zoo had mated two adults, only to discover later that the male was not purebred and that the offspring were hybrids.
India: Ex-colonel held for killing dog
A retired colonel was arrested for killing a stray puppy in Sector 36. Police took action after an FIR was lodged by an animal rights activist. “Sumedha Aiyyar, a Delhi resident and member of People for Animals, lodged a complaint at Sector 39 police station on Friday. She stated that Sector 36, resident Col (retired) CL Bhasin on Thursday killed a puppy by mercilessly thrashing it on the ground. When the puppy died, he threw it in the drain,” RK Singh, SHO, Sector 39, said.
“She further alleged that when his neighbor protested, he threatened to physically assault her. Then, the woman called a People for Animals representative; she reached Noida and inquired about the matter. She said that even the activist was threatened by the accused when she went to know why he killed the dog. She said investigation revealed that Bhasin had injured three more dogs in the past who were roaming outside his house,” Singh added.
