CAIRO: A bus carrying tourists in Egypt crashed on Saturday and killed at least 8 tourists and injured another 22, the state-run MENA news agency reported. According to the ministry of health, at least three of those killed in the accident on Egypt's Gulf of Suez coast were Russian citizens. The nationalities of the other five killed have yet to be released, but the ministry said they were attempting to identify the others. The country's Health Minister Hatem el-Gabali said he is arranging for all the injured, including the driver and a tour guide, to be moved from Hurghada General Hospital along the Red Sea coast to the Nasser Institute Hospital in Cairo. Some 6,000 people are killed annually on Egypt's roadways. Speeding, lack of traffic regulations and not wearing seat belts is a major cause for the large number of deaths. Less than two years ago, the Egyptian Parliament attempted to inact a number of new road laws, but they have largely gone unfollowed by drivers and police have done little to enforce the legislation that was aimed at reducing deaths and improving road conditions.
