Animals headlines from the world

Judge: NY must release records on monkey research
A judge says New York must release records on substance abuse experiments on monkeys and other animals.
The state's Office of Mental Health tried to block the Freedom of Information Act request from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, saying research scientists may be targeted by animal-rights terrorists.
In a ruling PCRM received this week, state Supreme Court Justice Richard Platkin rejects the state's argument.
India: Maneka Gandhi raises concern over rampant smuggling of cattle in Orissa
Eminent Environmentalist BJP MP and well known animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi urge people to raise voice against rampant smuggling of cattle in the state. Inaugurating the 68th Gostastami Utsav of Asureswar Gorakhyani Maneka as the Chief Guest Gandhi expressed that the people of Odisha are very Peaceful and kind hearted. But it is very sorrowful that cattle smuggling to West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh from Odisha is increasing. The cows are being transporting and then slaughtered.
Florida: Puppy mill protesters target pet stores
A group protested outside the Puppy Spot in Orlando Saturday.
The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida says puppies sold in pet stores typically come from puppy mills, and the puppies don't get proper care.
“The puppies that are bred are deliberately bred for the profit of the store. We instead encourage people to take the dogs that are at humane societies or animal controls that will lose their lives if they don't get adopted out in a timely manner,” said Bryan Wilson, Animal Rights Foundation of Florida coordinator.
Animal liberation at the movies
Expending the energy constructing a feature fiction film that follows radical animal rights activists in their political quest to liberate animals is a huge gamble. The fiction film industry in the US has very little space for political fiction, much less for any that may legitimize militant political tactics. Yet Bold Native, made on a shoe string by a small group of committed artists and activists, managed to wiggle its way into existence.
The film is super slick – cinematography and editing easily matches some of the best Hollywood fare out there.
Wales: Protest outside Llandudno's Lilly restaurant over foie gras
ANIMAL rights protesters picketed a restaurant because it has foie gras on the menu.
Viva (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) members organised the protest outside the Lilly restaurant on Llandudno's West Shore on Saturday.
The campaign group want the restaurant's owner to remove the French pate from the menu, because of the controversial way it is produced.
Rescue mission in West Hollywood
In West Hollywood today, buying a collar for a dog is easy. Buying a dog for the collar, however, is difficult.
That's because it's illegal for the few pet shops within city limits to sell anything but rescued dogs and cats. Stores can sell canines and felines only if they're from shelters.
As a result of the ban, which recently went into effect, some pet shops are struggling to survive.
Elite Animals, which was the original target of activists who pushed for the law, is only open sporadically these days. A ripple effect has even slowed business at the Orange Bone on Melrose Avenue – even though it's two blocks outside West Hollywood city limits.
