LONDON: A campaign to stop the selling of fur in a fashionable district in the East End of London reached a crescendo on Sunday. About 40 animal rights protesters gathered in the Brick Lane region, famous for its Sunday market and where some shops have been selling fur, both new and vintage. The activists first converged at The Shop, which houses a rail full of real fur coats and stoles, according to a report on IndyMedia. The Shop had to close early due to the noisy demo outside. The demo moved on to This Shop Rocks. The owner closed the doors and called the police, but activists had enough time to tell passers-by about the reason they were there. Across the road, The Vintage Store owner came out to announce that real fur would not be sold again in his shop. Another shop, Dumb Blonde, received the activists to discuss a fur-free policy. The street protest finally moved to the where activists have been gathering every week as part of an orchestrated campaign to get vintage chain Beyond Retro to ditch fur. The massive store is an expanding empire of second hand gear and stocks a great amount of fur, making it look fashionable to the its young clientele, even in a fur-averse country like the UK. Besides Brick Lane area, it has branches in London's West End, Brighton as well as Sweden. BM
