LONDON: The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) appeals to the Egyptian President to release Khairat al-Shater and Hassan Malik who have served over half of their sentences for the “al-Azhar Militia Case”. In Egyptian law it is customary to give a general pardon once the prisoner has fulfilled half their sentence. Al-Shater has been on good behaviour but as yet there is no indication of an early release. Khairat al-Shater has in total spent over 10 years in Egyptian prisons. His current sentence is 7 years of which he's served 3 and half years. No evidence was presented during the initial hearing and the criminal court had thrown out the case, however by the request of Hosni Mubarak, al-Shater and other prominent members of the MB (Muslim Brotherhood) were tried before military courts. In a statement to IHRC, Zahra, daughter of Khairat al-Shater said: “Please stand in solidarity with my father in calling for his immediate release, as he has been unjustly tried and detained for many years. As a result of his prolonged detention, his health has severely deteriorated.” IHRC urges the Egyptian government to abolish Emergency laws and calls for the immediate release of al-Shater and other political detainees and to end the process of politicizing the judiciary.
