5 reasons to buy organic food
Published in Bikya Masr on 19 - 05 - 2010

CAIRO: 1- The pound you spend supports the source you buy from:
If you are buying from an organic, local, sustainable farm, you're supporting a practice that is both safe for you and the environment.
2- Less chemicals:
Fertilizers and synthetic pesticides are not used to grow/harvest organic food, therefore you're less likely to ingest the persistent chemicals residues (e.g. DDT, dioxin, PCBs) that concentrate in your fat tissues.Organic agriculture and livestock focus on keeping the soil healthy and fertile by using methods such as crop rotation. Additionally, the animals aren't fed pesticide laden food either, so their fat tissues do not accumulate it.
3- Organic Fertilizer:
Manure is used by organic farmers to enhance the soil's quality. It's sourced from animals fed organic food and is a natural nutrient source for the soil. So this is basically a nutrient recycling method.
4- Ethical animal treatment:
How would you feel about being fed hormones to grow fatter for an occasion?
Factory farms treat animals like commodities and they often keep massive amounts in tight areas to maximize on the production per area factor. Organic farms are more likely to raise animals without cruelty and provide nourishment that would guarantee the proper quality of the products.
5- Free of antibiotics, hormones and drugs:
Organically raised livestock doesn't receive any drugs, ideally won't be given genetically modified food nor have their genes modified.
