Vodafone has spent EGP 200 million on many development projects in Egypt in order to eliminate illiteracy and support sustainable development. Vodafone Egypt has launched a number of community development initiatives during 2012 with the aim of attracting a large number of beneficiaries to participate in developing the society and spreading the concept of sustainable development. Moreover, Vodafone Egypt gives special attention to the development of education and the eradication of illiteracy in Egypt, in addition to fighting poverty, using mobile technology in developing new services for people with disabilities in order to help them benefit of technology in their daily lives. In order to achieve these goals, the company established successful cooperation with civil society organizations and NGOs. During the previous fourteen months, the number of beneficiaries of the development initiatives held by Vodafone reached more than 5 million, which is considered an achievement and a great incentive for Vodafone to continue its support for development efforts in Egypt. In 2003, Vodafone has established an independent institution for developing the society, in coordination with civil society organizations and NGOs. On his part, Eng. Hatem Dowidar, CEO of Vodafone Egypt stated that the company's responsibility towards the society is one of the main pillars that big company in Egypt and all over the world rely on in order to achieve success. He added that his company seeks to play a role in protecting the environment and creating job opportunities so as to boost the economy. On the other hand, Mohamed Hannah, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Vodafone Egypt Foundation, said " the foundation has launched initiatives to meet the needs of the society such as "Madrasty" which aimed at developing more than 350 schools, "Seheti fi Madrasty'' (My Health in My School), which established 2000 school clinics, and the Information technology initiative, which took place at 100 schools in Upper Egypt." He added that Vodafone has established cooperation with British Egyptian Business Association to launch joint initiatives and projects in the framework of social responsibility and that the company will help alleviate the problems faced by people living at slums by building a vocational training center in Manshiet Nasser.
