Egyptian General Authority for Roads, Bridges, and Land Transport (GARBLT) studies maintaining and upgrading 214 bridges in different governorates with total cost of more than 200 million Egyptian pounds (US$22.5million). Speaking to Amwal Al Ghad Saturday, Head of GARBLT Adel Tork stated that this step comes among authority's approved plan to upgrade bridges' efficiency in governorates in order to lower accident rates. He added that the study includes determining successive schedules to deliver the bridges beside choosing a contract company to execute the project. The chairman added that GARBLT formed joint committees with officials at governorates to determine current conditions of existent bridges and their needs of maintenance works. The authority is currently working on proving self-funding for maintenance and upgrading old road networks including bridges and roads, Tork added. GARBLThas maintained 488km of old road network with total cost estimated at more than one billion pounds among its current plan for upgrading and maintaining projects, the chairman clarified.
