CAPMAS: Egyptian imports drop by 13.3% in May

The total volume of Egypt's imports dropped by 13.3 percent in May 2016 to 43.5 billion Egyptian pounds (US$4.89 billion) from 50.2 billion pounds in May 2015.
The monthly statistics about state's foreign trade released by Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on Wednesday stated that 20 commodities seized 57.6 percent of the total imports.
The imports volume of the 20 commodities recorded 25.1 billion pounds in May 2016 opposed to 26.2 billion pounds a year earlier, marking 4.4 percent decline.
According to the report, imports of ten commodities decreased to 18.2 billion pounds in May 2016 compared to 20.6 billion at the same month of 2015, registering 11.3 percent drop.
Imports of dairy products led the list of sectors whose imports dropped with a 35.2 percent decline to 522.1 million pounds in May 2016 opposed to 805.8 million in May 2015.
Following dairy sector, imports of meat sagged by 11.6 percent in May 2016 to 730 million pounds from 1.1 billion pounds a year earlier.
Meanwhile, imports of ten sectors hiked in May 2016 to 6.8 billion pounds from 5.6 billion pounds a year earlier, registering 20.7 percent growth.
The report showed that corn imports rose by 20.6 percent in May 2016 to 1.2 billion pounds against 959 million pounds in May 2015, while imports of copper and its products climbed by 19.1 percent from 619.7 million pounds in May 2015 to 738.1 million pounds in May 2016.
The total imports of car parts jumped by 13.4 percent in May 2016 to 942.9 million pounds versus 831.9 million pounds.
Moreover, Egyptian imports of wood products increased in May 2016 to 1.2 billion pounds from 1.1 billion pounds, making a 6.2 percent growth.
