Italian student Giulio Regeni's killing will not affect Europe's outlook on security conditions in Egypt, Aswat Masriya quoted the chairman of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee as saying. Chairman Elmar Brok said, in reference to the mysterious death of Regeni last week, that similar incidents happen in other countries and that the situation in Egypt is currently stable. A Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Brok is leading a delegation from the parliament on a visit to Egypt. The delegation met with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi earlier today, discussing cooperation and regional developments including the refugee crisis and terrorism. Regeni, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student, disappeared on Jan. 25 which marked the fifth anniversary of the 2011 Uprising that toppled former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. He was found dead 10 days later along the side of the Cairo-Alexandria desert road, marred by torture marks and bruises in different places, according to the chief prosecutor for accidents in Egypt's South Giza. His body was flown back to Italy on Saturday. Regeni was a visiting scholar at the American University in Cairo. He conducted research on independent trade unions and was a Cairo contributor for the communist Italian newspaper "il manifesto", writing under a pseudonym on the labor and trade union movement in Egypt. Since the incident, Egypt and Italy have engaged in high-level diplomatic efforts to follow up on the investigation procedures of Regeni's death. Source: Aswat Masriya
