Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly met Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Sunday on the sidelines of the 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg, with both leaders highlighting efforts to expand bilateral cooperation across technology, education, and economic sectors. Madbouly praised the historic relations between Egypt and Japan, which span more than 70 years and were elevated to a "strategic partnership" in April 2023. He congratulated Takaichi on her election as Japan's first female prime minister and commended Japan's role in major Egyptian development projects, including the Grand Egyptian Museum, as well as the two countries' ongoing partnership in education. The Egyptian premier said Cairo aims to broaden collaboration in advanced technology, artificial intelligence, governance-related initiatives, and economic development. He highlighted shared priorities on climate change, trilateral cooperation with African countries through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and peacebuilding programmes. Takaichi expressed appreciation for the longstanding ties between the two nations and reaffirmed her commitment to expanding cooperation, building on agreements reached during recent high-level visits by Japanese officials to Egypt and Madbouly's recent trip to Japan.
