Egypt's Minister of Public Business Sector Mohammed Sheemy on Saturday inspected the restoration of the historic Continental Hotel in Cairo's Opera Square, a flagship project in the redevelopment of Khedival Cairo, the Cabinet said. The project, managed by the state-owned Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels (EGOTH), covers 10,000 square metres and will include 300 five-star rooms and suites, as well as three basement levels for services and parking. Sheemy reviewed construction progress and urged adherence to the project's timeline and quality standards, according to the statement. He said the redevelopment aims to maximise the value of state-owned heritage assets and that a leading international operator will manage the hotel once agreements are finalised. The Continental, first built in 1866 and renamed the Grand Continental in 1908, is being rebuilt to match its original design, including the iconic façade facing Adly Street.
