Khaled Sherif, a prominent Egyptian economist, has been elected as Executive Director representing Egypt and Djibouti at the African Development Bank (AfDB) for a three-year term, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced Thursday. CBE Governor Hassan Abdalla, who also represents Egypt at the AfDB, welcomed the appointment, saying it will help strengthen Egypt and Djibouti's voice at the continental lender and support their long-term economic goals. Sherif, who previously served as AfDB Vice President for Operations, has over 35 years of experience in development finance, spanning roles at the World Bank and the US Agency for International Development, according to his LinkedIn account and website. He has worked in more than 70 countries and played a leading role in economic reform programmes in Romania and Ukraine, where he served as an advisor to former heads of state. He was also the senior economic advisor to the minister of economy of Abu Dhabi, UAE and worked on the development programmes of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and the Sudan. Sherif is also an academic and prolific writer, having authored seven books and thousands of articles on economic reform, crisis management, and governance. He holds a PhD in Public Policy and Management from Boston University and has taught at George Washington University and the American University in Cairo. His election is expected to give Egypt and Djibouti a more prominent role in shaping AfDB policy and project financing decisions at a time of heightened demand for development support across Africa.
