Egypt's Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Tuesday said Japanese manufacturer Sumitomo's operations in the country employ more than 12,000 workers and generate over €300 million in annual exports, as he inaugurated a new factory in 10th of Ramadan City. He described the new 150,000-square-metre facility as one of the world's largest for wire harness production and a key link in the global supply chain for automotive components, according to a Cabinet statement. He said the factory supplies wiring systems to global carmakers, including Toyota, and is part of Egypt's broader push to position itself as a hub for automotive component exports. The project received Egypt's golden licence in September 2023, broke ground in December, and began operations by the end of 2024. The site currently employs over 2,000 workers, with plans to exceed 3,000 by year-end, Prime Minister Madbouly said. The facility includes a training centre aimed at preparing young Egyptians for work in the sector. Women make up over 40 per cent of the workforce, he added.
