The Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) on Wednesday rejected claims that a value-added tax (VAT) would be introduced on sugar in the 2025/2026 fiscal year, reaffirming that sugar remains exempt under existing tax laws. In a statement, the authority clarified that the new budget proposal, currently being reviewed by the Egyptian Parliament, does not include any provisions to impose VAT on sugar. "The reports circulating in the media are inaccurate," the tax body said, urging news outlets to "verify information with the relevant authorities before publishing." Under Law No. 67 of 2016, sugar is listed among the goods and services exempt from VAT, and the authority confirmed that this exemption remains unchanged in the upcoming fiscal year.
