UN: Egypt turns green commitments into 'real impact'
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 23 - 03 - 2025

Egypt's green transformation is gaining momentum as the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects continues to bridge the gap between ambitious climate goals and real, on-the-ground impact, said UN official on Sunday.
Speaking at the third conference of the initiative, Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, emphasised the power of local action in driving sustainable change.
*"At its core, the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects breathes life into the SDGs. It turns national commitments into real impact, from the bustling streets of Cairo to the most remote villages. And that is where true transformation begins: at the local level," Panova stated.
She highlighted that Egypt has made significant strides in sustainable development over the past few years, with a strong emphasis on integrating green and digital transformation into its economic policies. However, she also pointed out that achieving real change requires placing people and communities at the center of development efforts.
"It is at the local level where there are an interplay between climate, resilience, and development, Panova noted, adding that localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is essential for creating a tangible impact. She further explained that climate action and smart solutions must be driven by local actors, ensuring that technology, innovation, and sustainable practices reach those who need them most.
The initiative, which aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030, supports projects that integrate technology and sustainability across urban and rural areas. From smart irrigation systems in farmlands to renewable energy solutions in remote villages, the programme ensures that green development reaches every corner of the country.
Experts at the conference emphasised that local engagement is key to long-term sustainability. By empowering communities with smart solutions, Egypt is not only mitigating climate risks but also fostering economic growth and social equity.
With global climate challenges escalating, Egypt's model of localised, tech-driven sustainability could serve as a blueprint for other nations striving to balance development with environmental responsibility.
As Panova's words suggest, true transformation begins at the grassroots level, and Egypt is proving that a greener future is built from the ground up.
