European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica praised Egypt's efforts in securing a ceasefire, facilitating hostage and detainee exchanges, and ensuring humanitarian aid delivery. She also highlighted Egypt's role in pushing forward reconstruction in Gaza without the forced displacement of Palestinians. During her meeting with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in Cairo on Sunday, Šuica reaffirmed the EU's support for efforts to restore stability and advance the establishment of a Palestinian state as the key to lasting peace. The talks also covered developments in Libya, Sudan, and Syria. Both sides stressed the need for concerted efforts to stabilise these countries and protect their citizens. Šuica underscored the strategic importance of Egypt-EU relations, recognising Egypt's vital role in regional security. She expressed the EU's commitment to enhancing trade and investment ties with Egypt, aligning economic cooperation with the growing political momentum between the two sides. President Sisi welcomed the creation of the EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean position. He described it as a positive step towards strengthening cooperation between the EU and Mediterranean nations. He also highlighted the growing momentum in Egypt-EU relations, particularly after their upgrade to a strategic and comprehensive partnership in March 2024. He stressed the importance of intensifying joint efforts to effectively implement the key pillars of this partnership. Both sides agreed on the importance of cooperation on migration. They called for a comprehensive approach linking migration to development, enhancing legal migration pathways, and addressing the root causes of irregular migration.
