Egypt-Saudi power link nears completion, 1st phase ready by July – PM
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 19 - 02 - 2025

The first phase of the Egyptian-Saudi electricity interconnection project, with a 1,500-megawatt capacity, is set to be completed by July, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly announced on Wednesday.
The full project, which will ultimately deliver 3,000 megawatts (3 gigawatts), is a landmark engineering feat, with a portion of the connection running underwater through the Gulf of Aqaba.
A Game-Changer for Energy Stability
Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Madbouly emphasised the strategic importance of the project in enhancing energy security and grid stability for both nations. He assured that the initiative aligns with Egypt's efforts to prepare for the upcoming summer, ensuring stable electricity supply and preventing power shortages like those experienced last year.
Optimising Peak Demand across Borders
One of the key benefits of the power link, according to Prime Minister Madbouly, is the ability to exchange electricity based on peak demand differences between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
"In Egypt, peak electricity demand occurs at night during the summer, while in Saudi Arabia, peak hours are in the daytime. This means Saudi Arabia can rely on Egypt for power in the morning, while Egypt can draw from Saudi Arabia's supply at night. This synchronised exchange will strengthen the stability and efficiency of both power grids," he explained.
Full Capacity Just Months Away
The Egyptian prime minister revealed that following the completion of the first phase, the project will reach its full 3-gigawatt capacity within a few months, solidifying Egypt and Saudi Arabia's energy cooperation and marking a significant step toward regional energy integration.
