Egypt's Ministry of Transport announced significant progress in the development of the Tahya Misr 1 Container Terminal at Damietta Port, highlighting the arrival of state-of-the-art equipment to enhance operational efficiency. The terminal has received five advanced quay cranes from China's HHMC, with a total of 12 to come. These cranes will significantly boost the speed and efficiency of cargo handling operations, as per a Cabinet statement. The newly acquired cranes feature advanced technologies, including high lifting capacities of up to 75 tons, a 72-metre boom, and the ability to handle ships stacked up to 11 containers high, according to the statement. They are also equipped with cutting-edge safety systems, such as sensors, cameras, and digital integration with smart port management systems, ensuring real-time operational tracking and improved coordination. Additionally, 20 electric rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes have arrived, with 40 more expected, as part of efforts to equip the terminal with environmentally friendly machinery. This aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030 for sustainable development. The Tahya Misr 1 Container Terminal at Damietta Port has 1,970 metres of quay length, 18-metre depths, and a one million square metre back area. Once fully operational, it will have a handling capacity of 3.5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). The project is a partnership with global operator Damietta Alliance, a consortium comprising Eurogate Germany, Contship Italia Group, and the global shipping line Hapag-Lloyd, the statement added. The terminal is a crucial part of Egypt's logistics corridor, along with the Tanta-Damietta railway line, Damietta Dry Port, and Damietta Port, supporting the government's goal to establish the country as a regional hub for transport and trade.
