Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, on Wednesday signed a €1.4 million development grant agreement with Economic and Commercial Counselor of Spain in Egypt, Eduardo Soriano. The grant will fund the initial feasibility study for the extension of the first line of the Cairo Metro northwards to Shibin El-Qanater, as part of the Sustainable Transport Projects under the National Platform of the NWFE Programme. The Spanish company Typsa will carry out the study and sign an implementation contract with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT). The project is expected to take eight months to complete. Al-Mashat emphasised that the agreement is a key part of the Ministry's efforts to integrate local resources and international partnerships to promote development in vital sectors. She highlighted that the Metro projects are a prime example of successful collaboration with multilateral and bilateral development partners, offering an environmentally friendly transport solution that serves millions of citizens daily across Greater Cairo. The minister also emphasised the role of sustainable projects in economic development. Through the NWFE Programme, the ministry is partnering internationally on transport projects, including extending the Metro to Shibin El-Qanater and converting the Abu Qir Alexandria railway line into an electric metro to improve connectivity and infrastructure.
