Egypt's unemployment rate edged down to 6.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2024, marking a slight decline of 0.2 per cent from the previous quarter, Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Wednesday. CAPMAS showed in its report an increase of 1.0 per cent in the labour force, reaching 31.397 million individuals compared to 31.101 million in the previous quarter. This workforce is divided between urban centres around 13.758 million individuals and rural areas about 17.639 million people. The gender disparity in unemployment remains a challenge, with females facing a significantly higher unemployment rate than males. * Male labour force: 25.537 million individuals * Female labour force: 5.860 million individuals Unemployment decreased in the first quarter due to 351,000 more people finding jobs and 55,000 fewer people unemployed, resulting in a net increase of 296,000 in the labour force.
