Egypt allocates EGP 96b for Cairo's development – minister

Egypt's Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in Egypt announced on Monday that Cairo is scheduled to undergo 1,260 development projects. These initiatives will receive a substantial allocation of 96.2 billion Egyptian pounds ($2 billion) in public investments for the 2023–2024 plan, according the a Cabinet's statement.
The ministry's report pointed to directing investments worth 29.6 billion pounds to the housing sector (31 per cent), and 26 billion pounds (27 per cent) to the transport sector.
The local development sector is allocated 10.7 billion pounds (11 per cent), higher education 4.5 billion pounds (4 per cent), health sector investments amount to 1.9 billion pounds (2 per cent), and other sectors in the governorate are allocated investments worth 22.9 billion pounds (24 per cent).
The report highlighted the most important developmental targets in the housing sector in Cairo for the 2023–2024 plan, which include directing about 19 billion pounds for drinking water and sanitation services, in addition to 691.5 million pounds for electricity services. The number of development projects in this sector is 93.
The local development sector has a total of 495 projects. The primary targets in this area include allocating 8.8 billion pounds for local road building and 257 million pounds to improve energy networks.
The plan also intends to carry out 173 development projects in the higher education sector, including those to complete human resource development programmes and infrastructural development.
Hala al-Saeed, Egypt's Planning and Economic Development Minister, emphasised the importance of community engagement in reaching local sustainable development objectives, promoting regional balance, and closing inter-governorate development disparities. This aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the global aim of Partnerships for the Goals.
