Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) has announced on Tuesday that the number of tourists has increased by 85.4 percent to reach 4.9 million tourists during the first half of 2022. Egypt regained about 80.4 percent of the number of tourists during the first half of 2022, compared to the numbers before the Corona pandemic in 2020, according to CAPMAS report. The tourists have spent 52.6 million nights in Egypt during the first half of 2022, a 63.6 percent increase compared to 32.2 million nights in the same period of 2021. In 2021, the tourists have spent 93.8 million nights, a 118.3 percent increase compared to 43 million nights in 2020, the statement said. CAPMAS said that 8 million tourists visited Egypt in 2021, a 117.5 percent increase compared to 3.7 million tourists in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. Tourism contributes up to 15 percent of Egypt's economic output and is a major source of foreign exchange, alongside the Suez Canal, expatriates' remittances, and export earnings.
