Microbus driver referred to state security court
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 11 - 08 - 2010

Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has referred Emad al-Kabir and his cousin Mohamed Abdel Rahman to the Emergency Supreme State Security Court on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition, firing in an urban area and intimidating citizens.
A criminal lab investigation has concluded that the firearm found in the possession of Abdel Rahman had been recently used and that the bullets found in Nahya street were fired from it.
Emad Mohamed Ali (known in the media as Emad al-Kabir), a microbus driver who was filmed while being sodomized by a police captain in Bulaq al-Dakrour police station three years ago, was arrested by Giza security forces for engaging in a gun battle with another microbus driver, Ali al-Zuheiry.
Investigations by the North Giza prosecution services found that al-Kabir fought with al-Zuheiry over who had priority to pick up passengers at a microbus stop in Bulaq al-Dakrour, Giza. Al-Kabir and 21 of his friends severely beat al-Zuhairy, who in turn summoned his own friends and the situation reportedly escalated into a melee of shooting and fighting with clubs. Eight stores on Nahya street were smashed.
Abdel Rahma and al-Kabir are currently detained pending further investigations.
According to initial investigations, two witnesses have said they saw al-Kabir in the street when the fight broke out and that he possessed a firearm. A third witness said he saw al-Kabir hiding a weapon under his clothes.
Meanwhile, al-Kabir has denied the charges saying he was injured after a recent road accident and refused to join the fight even though his cousin summoned him for help.
Al-Kabir said that police have been harassing him since he pressed charges against two policemen who sodomized him back in 2007. Two officers, Islam Nabih and Reda Fathy, were sentenced to three years in prison with hard labor, in an unprecedented case that received much hype in international press.
