Army officer mistakenly killed, 138 police officers injured, say sources

An army lieutenant was killed by a security vehicle that ran over him by mistake, the Health Ministry said Friday.
According to an Al-Masry Al-Youm report, the Health Ministry's emergency department said that Lieutenant Mohamed Fouad, 24, was carried to Shubra hospital in critical condition on Friday but doctors could not save his life.
In addition, a security source told the paper that the Interior Ministry has reported 138 police officers were also injured Friday. Sixteen soldiers were also injured by shotgun blasts, the source added in a statement read on Egyptian state TV.
Images posted on the Interior Ministry's Facebook page showed some soldiers injured by shotgun pellets in their necks and legs. The page said that the pellets were shot by protesters at the soldiers on Friday.
According to state TV, the source added that the Central Security Forces are exercising the highest level of restraint against protesters, even after they broke into a government building just feet away from the Interior Ministry. State TV earlier reported that some protesters broke into the Egyptian Tax Authority building, an office tower located near the Interior Ministry.
The Interior Ministry's Facebook page also said some protesters are collecting the butane cylinders inside the tax authority building and throwing them at security officers.
Ayman Fathy, a witness at the protest outside the Interior Ministry, denied such claims, telling Egypt Independent in a phone interview that protesters had only collected furniture from the tax authority building to use as shields for the live ammunition being fired at them by police.
Images being broadcast live on the Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr channel showed extensive smoke billowing in the air after police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters hurling stones at Central Security Forces.
