Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby on Monday said he would quit his post if he fails to do something useful. In an interview with the private satellite channel Dream, Araby pledged to adopt "all moral and legitimate means to develop the Arab League's activities." Araby suggested Arab states should take after the European states, which managed to turn from strife to unity and progress. Addressing Palestinian-Israeli issue, Araby stressed that he is working hard to solve the conflict. He said more than 120 countries had recognized a Palestinian state, but Israel managed to win the international community to its side. He said Egypt seeks to win wider international recognition of a Palestinian state. Formerly Egypt's foreign minister, Araby replaced Amr Moussa as the league's chief in July. He faced sharp criticism last week after a meeting in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. During the meeting, Araby stressed Assad's legitimacy as president and rejected foreign intervention in domestic Arab affairs. Assad's regime launched a bloody crackdown in March against popular protests demanding political reform. Nearly 1300 protesters have reportedly been killed during the uprising.
