A number of political parties and human rights groups are attempting to destabilize Egypt by utilizing grants estimated at LE1 billion, which had been allocated by the United States and the European Union (EU) to support the country, an Egyptian politician said Monday. During a popular conference in the city of Tanta, Daqahlia Governorate, chairman of the liberal Wafd Party, Sayyed al-Badawy, said the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is investigating his claim. “The 25 January revolution is in danger, enemies inside and outside Egypt are spending millions to sabotage the revolt. They want to make Egyptians yearn for the ousted regime which used to yield to the wishes of the United States and Israel,” he alleged. Badawy accused the US and Israel of funding several media outlets in an attempt to control public opinion. He said Egypt is going through a critical stage that requires vigilance. He added that people took to the streets on 8 July when they discovered that political life remains dominated by the same old faces and techniques. Badawy warned of slowness in prosecuting corrupt former officials and stressed the importance of the armed forces in protecting the revolution.
