Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud approved Friday a request that will be sent to Spanish authorities for the extradition of Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem, who was arrested in Spain Wednesday. Assistant Attorney General and the office's spokesperson Adel al-Saeed said the file contains a complete copy of the investigations carried out by Egyptian authorities, evidence of crimes allegedly committed by Sallem and of his involvement in corruption cases, the penal code articles according to which he will be tried before the Cairo Criminal Court, the articles of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, a copy of his Egyptian passport and a certificate listing his visits to Egypt between 2005 and 2011. The passport proves that Salem is still an Egyptian national, which means that he applied for and received Spanish citizenship in violation of Spanish law, which prohibits dual nationality. Director General of Egyptian Interpol Magy al-Shafie said earlier Friday that he was coordinating with the attorney general's counsel, Hisham al-Drandaly, to send a file to Spanish authorities regarding the extradition. Shafie said the Spanish judiciary will consider the case and determine whether to hand Sallem over to Egypt. La Vanguardia, a daily Spanish newspaper, reported that the High Criminal Court in Spain issued a warrant for Sallem's arrest after Spanish authorities who had been watching him for some time noticed he was trying to smuggle large sums of money.
