Interpol has issued arrest warrants for seven of former President Hosni Mubarak's officials who are wanted on financial corruption charges and have escaped abroad, said Magdy Shafei, director general of the Egyptian Interpol. “We sent a number of letters concerning the list of fugitives who have fled Egypt and who are wanted in a number of cases,” Shafei told Al-Masry Al-Youm. “There are around 400 names.” Shafei also said that the Office of International Cooperation, which is under the control of Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud's office, had sent out the arrest warrant for Hussein Salem who is wanted in connection with a natural gas deal, former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali, former Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid, businessmen Yasin Mansour and Hesham Hazeq, Emirati citizen Hussain Sajwany and Wahid Attalah. The arrest warrants were issued after the defendants were charged in various cases involving financial corruption and squandering of public funds. Sahfei added that Interpol received official information confirming that Ghali had travelled to Lebanon and is now in London. He said Interpol would arrest him as soon as he returned to Lebanon, but cannot arrest him in the UK because it is a safe haven for fugitives as there are no treaties between it and Egypt.
