Amonsito textile workers continued their demonstration yesterday in front of Shura Council headquarters in downtown Cairo. Workers protested the government's failure to implement an earlier agreement to compensate them for unpaid salaries before liquidation of the company. The agreement was signed in mid-March between Amonsito officials, the Bank of Egypt and the Manpower Ministry. Workers say they were again forced to hit the streets after realizing the agreement would not be honored. Some warned of plans to move their protest to the headquarters of the Bank of Egypt--to which the company is heavily indebted--if the terms of the agreement were not carried out within four days. Amonsito workers were not the only ones airing grievances outside the Shura Council on Saturday. Several subscribers to the East Qantara land reclamation project in North Sinai also staged protests to demand police protection from marauding Bedouin. They complain they are unable to reach the land allotted them by the government due to threats by local tribesmen. Only meters away, telephone factory workers continued their protest for the 27th consecutive day to demand payment of back salaries, while employees of state-run land-improvement centers in Beheria and Nubareya likewise demanded improved financial conditions.
