Airlines start operating from new Alexandria airport

In Alexandria civil aviation authorities began transferring the operations of Gulfi, African and other foreign airlines to the new Borg al-Arab International airport on Monday. The airlines had been operating out of Nozha airport and the old Borg al-Arab airpot.
President Hosni Mubarak opened the new Borg al-Arab airport in October to manage an increasing number of flights to and from Alexandria.
Sources at the airport said Kuwaiti Airlines flights will be the first to operate from Borg al-Arab International Airport on Monday. Twelve flights belonging to the airline will operate weekly.
Sources added that the transfer will take place gradually so that airlines can settle flights without problems.
Sources expect the transfer to be finished by the end of January 2011.
The government is not planning to close Nozha airport, the sources added, but will spend LE132 million on widening and developing its runways.
A plan to develop the road linking Alexandria and the new Borg al-Arab airport has been drawn up to facilitate the transportation of tourists, sources added.
