Truck owners and drivers will go on a general strike today in Cairo and other governorates to protest against banning trailers as of January 2011. The Interior Ministry refused their demands to amend the Traffic Act and allow them to connect their trucks to their trailers or to compensate them. Well-informed sources said the police will abort the strike so as to avoid disorder on the roads and the highways. They told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the security services summoned the truck owners and asked them not to protest until the officials look into their demands. Yet they insisted to go on strike until the traffic department revokes its decision regarding the trailers. A government source said Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif asked the governors and the security bodies to study the problem within 48 hours and its repercussions on the gas stations, because the gas is transported to them by trailer trucks, which the Ministry of Petroleum is preparing a detailed report on.
