The Boycott
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 27 - 01 - 2009

Many Egyptian men like Nancy and Haifa the pop singers. They also like Pepsi-Cola and hamburgers. And they like to drive American SUVs and put up the volume of the music they listen to.
These men pray to God that the Arab-Israeli conflict would end and the State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital would be established so that they can drink their Pepsi-Cola in the Gaza Strip and watch Haifa singing in Ramallah.
But Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, President of the Federation of Muslim Scholars, called for boycotting Israeli and American products and said that a Muslim who buys them would be a sinner. “Why buy an American car if you could buy a Japanese or German car? What would you lose? Have we not seen our brothers in India breaking Pepsi-Cola bottles,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh said those who call for a boycott are hardliners, emphasizing that trade between countries is good. “We would only be harming ourselves if we did so, for the world has become interdependent. They need our oil and we need their products,” he said.
So our religious scholars have divided among themselves after the Gaza massacre. The ones in Riyadh allow Pepsi-Cola and the others in Doha prohibit it. I do not know Cairo's position on the issue. Pepsi was being sold in the cafes here till last night.

Qaradawi prohibits Pepsi in Doha but supports the American military base there. How strange! I wonder what Nancy and Haifa think of this
