Muslim Brotherhood (MB) Guide Mahdi Akef rejected a truce with the regime like the truce that the Syrian MB has announced, whereby the group would unite with the regime there to face the crisis in Gaza. He told Al-Masry Al-Youm: “We call for reform and democracy, and we will stop hostility to the regime when it responds to the demands of the Egyptian people and when it ceases to ignore the views of all political forces. Only then will I tell all MB members to support the regime.”
He added: “Our position is determined by complex political issues, and we are different from the Syrian MB. The regime here wants dispersion so that it alone remains powerful and all other political forces weak.” Criticizing the security services for arresting demonstrators supporting Gaza, Akef said: “Perhaps our security services should take after Israel that only disperses demonstrations without arrest.” Dr. Abdel Hamid Al-Ghazali, political advisor of the group, explained that the Muslim Brotherhood is against the repressive policies of the authoritarian regime, not against certain individuals.
