Hundreds of Algerian students studying at the Arab League Research Institute yesterday staged a sit-in before the Algerian embassy in Zamalek. They demanded the rescinding of the decision taken by the Ministry of Higher Education in Algeria on December 28 that does not recognize the certificate of the Institute. Tawfik Omar Abdel Ghani, a student, said: “We are here since the day before yesterday, and there is another sit-in before the Ministry of Higher Education in Algeria. We will continue until our demands are met. That decision should not be retroactive. We formed a committee of 18 students to demand our rights, but so far to no avail.” He added that there are more than 500 Algerian students of post-graduate studies, and 800-1000 students auditing. The Algerian cultural attaché Ibrahim Ahmad said the ambassador met with the students two weeks ago and briefed the minister in Algeria but did not receive a response yet. “We are but mediators, not more,” he said.
