Nubian activist and writer Haggag Adoul said the first Nubian village on the shores of Lake Nasser will start to be built after Bairam. He told al-Masry al-Youm that Aswan Governor Mustafa el-Sayed a few days ago met with Nubian activists to hear their views on the resettlement of the Nubians on Lake Nasser or whether they would stay in their current place in Kom Ombo. “All Nubian activists agreed to return to the shores of the lake,” he said.
“I told the governor that preventing the Nubians from returning to their original places is not in the interest of national security, as Nubia is an extension to the mainland and not a separate entity. This is the slogan of all Nubians,” he said, praising the governor for his understanding. Adoul pointed out that the Nubians got many promises from the time of President Nasser till President Mubarak that they would go back to their land on the lake, but all these promises have not been implemented. “We need a presidential decree for the Nubians to return. After that, the residents of Aswan can come, and so can any Egyptian who wishes to live or invest in this region,” he said.
Adoul suggested the establishment of a new valley around the lake as a new miracle by Egypt in the twenty-first century, pointing out that all studies indicate that there are about 2 million acres suitable for agriculture in the region, in addition to the availability of water and fisheries in the lake. He said: “The area can be a great tourist attraction for tourists intending to engage in water sports or visit the many temples in the region.”
