Deputy head of the Salafi Dawah Yasser Borhamy said Tuesday that he was defending the constitution in the video clip that sparked controversy over the past two days. Borhamy, who was a member of the assembly that drafted the constitution, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the video showed him in a meeting with more than 40 Salafi scholars, stressing that he was trying to convince them that the charter was not at odds with Islamic Sharia, in which he succeeded. "They thought the document is against Islamic law and contains anti-Islamic articles," he said. The second article of the draft stipulates that the "principles of Islamic law are the main source of legislation." Borhamy said he explained to the scholars the differences between Islamists, liberals, and Copts in terms of their perception of the constitutional articles. “It is not my business if someone interprets the clip in his own way," he added. Explaining his call for "purging the Supreme Constitutional Court," Borhamy said he meant setting a legal role for the court separate from the political sphere.
