Arrangements are being made for the launch of a huge “Gamal Mubarak… Egypt looks forward to a new beginning” campaign in Alexandria said coordinator Mohamed Kassab. The campaign, to collect signatures in support of Gamal Mubarak as a presidential candidate in the 2011 elections, will be launched immediately following the Eid holiday. He said campaigners would be working on a round the clock basis to collect as many signatures as possible.
Kassab expects that the campaign will be an immediate and enormous success and said the fact it had not been launched earlier was due to the unstable political situation.
He added that the campaign managed to collect over 15,000 signatures on the first day of its launch in Kafr al-Sheikh Governorate, raising the total number of signatures to 100,000 in the four governorates of Kafr al-Sheikh, Daqahlia, Suez and Cairo, proving how successful the campaign had been.
Meanwhile, a number of posters supporting the nomination of Gamal Mubarak were torn down and burned in the Bir Masoud area in Miami, Alexandria. Eyewitnesses said they saw five drunken young men throwing beer bottles, tearing down some of the banners and burning the rest before driving away in a new convertible.
A local resident, Hesham Orabi, said, “We were surprised to see what was happening. It lasted no more than 10 minutes in the early hours of the morning, right after the Bir Masoud police patrol left.”
A number of posters supporting the nomination of the National Party candidate for the People's Assembly Mufid Shehab had also been torn down in Suez Canal Street by unknown persons.
