CAIRO – The Italian government will report to the Foreign Affairs committees of the Italian House of Representatives and the Senate on the case of Giulio Regeni, who disappeared in Cairo in 2016, according to the Italian newspaper Articolo 21. The first point to be discussed in the report is the decision announced in August on the return of the Italian Ambassador to Egypt, a decision which ends a diplomatic crisis that started in April 2016, Articolo 21 said on Monday. The Italian official authorities' decision came after they had received new documents from Egyptian investigators on the case, and found positive steps to resume cooperation with the Egyptian official authorities, Articolo 21 added. The documents were received in Arabic and they will be translated within these weeks. Meanwhile, Giulio Regeni's parents had announced their intention to go to Egypt just to be able to follow up investigations. Articolo 21 gave assurance that Italy's interests are in restoring direct relations with Egypt and with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, not only in view of the Libyan chaos, but also for clear economic issues. On January 25, 2016, the 28-year old Italian postgraduate student Regeni disappeared in Cairo, only for his dead body to be found on February 3 alongside the Cairo-Alexandria highway, bearing signs of extreme torture and beating, according to Reuters. This murder has led to strained relations between Italy and Egypt.
