Doha – Doha-based Al-Jazeera channel is taking some hits on social media after spreading rumors about Saudi Arabia's plans to shut down Hajj (i.e ritual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia) to Qatar's pilgrims this year. Social media users have been abuzz with a cartoon caricature of Al-Jazeera channel spewing fabricated lies to malign Saudi Arabia. In the caricature, there is an open door with a sign that reads: ‘Open To All Pilgrims,' while Saudi Arabia is portrayed as welcoming the influx of pilgrims. At the same time, Al-Jazeera shows up with news reading that ‘the doors are closed,' with fake photos of closed doors in the back screen.
