Cairo – A Ministry of Endowments imam has praised a draft law currently prepared by Al-Azhar to combat hate speech. Speaking to Al-Bawaba News on Friday, sheikh Nasha't Zarea said the proposed draft law calls for peaceful coexistence and denounces all forms of violence and extremism. The bill will contribute to renewing religious discourse and reflecting the correct image of Islam, he added. The proposed law also prohibits any act of discrimination between citizens, Zarea concluded. On Wednesday, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayeb announced that his Islamic institution will submit a draft law to parliament criminalizing hate speech, particularly against any religious beliefs. He noted said Al-Azhar is submitting this draft law upon the president's request as a way to combat ideologies "that do not represent Islam." Al-Azhar said that this law aims to criminalise "incitement to hatred" and "violent crimes committed in the name of religion," and should help promote tolerance.
