Cairo- Dr. Ali Gomaa, Egypt's former Grand Mufti and Chairman of Masr El Kheir Foundation (Bountiful Egypt) stated that most of those imprisoned for failing to pay debts are women, which asserts the burden Egyptian women carry and highlights their struggle. Gomaa addressed Egyptian women saying, "We will always support you for you are the true heroes who have always served the country and the people." While signing a protocol agreement with the Ministry of Interior Affairs to help women who have been sentenced a prison term for failing to pay their debts, Gomaa added that job opportunities must be created to help women in need. He pointed out that four factories for handcrafts were recently opened in addition to another factory for bed covers. Gomaa stressed that for three years, he has been dreaming of ways to safeguard women against imprisonment for not being able to pay their debts and that he wishes to see the end of this phenomenon in Egypt.
