Cairo - Mohamed Mehanna, Adviser to Al-Azhar's Grand Imam, said that Sufi ceremonies do not have any role in promoting extremism; as Sufism supports good morals among a large number of Muslims. Historically, Muslims have used the Arabic word taṣawwuf to identify the practice of Sufis. Mainstream scholars of Islam define Tasawwuf or Sufism as the name for the inner or esoteric dimension of Islam which is supported and complemented by outward or exoteric practices of Islam, such as Sharia. The statement came during the speech delivered, on Wednesday, by the Al-Azhar official before a conference organized by Cairo University's Faculty of Information.
