Arab League rejects military intervention & safe zones in Syria
Published in Albawaba on 31 - 01 - 2017

Cairo – The League of Arab States re-emphasized that any military intervention in Syrian crisis is not the right approach, stressing that it is necessary for the parties in the crisis to communicate in order to reach a suitable settlement.
In declarations to journalists, the authorized Minister, Mahmoud Afify, the Official Spokesman for the Secretary-general of the Arab League, expressed the Arab League's welcome of any effort aiming at resolving Syrian Crisis. He added that there are communications between the Arab League and the International Envoy on Syria, ‘Staffan de Mistura' in this regard.
With respect to the calls for establishing safe zones in Syria, The Official Spokesman for the Secretary-general of the Arab League said, "We heard this suggestion, and this matter has been raised over the past years, and we have to wait to see the extent of its crystallization in the most serious communications, and there are various dialogues, but the priority in this stage is to address the most general context of the crisis, adding "for sure, the International Community has currently realized that the military solution is not the right track and if the points of view closely meet through the efforts in this context, it is possible to resolve a lot of the issues relevant to the status of the civilians who are considered the greatest loser in the Syrian Crisis.
With regard to the content of the Istana meeting held for inviting the opposing armed groups to attend Geneva Conference, ‘Afify' said, "the armed groups as long as they have not talked about groups adopting terrorist, militant, or extremist ideology or have desired to contravene the existence of the Syrian State itself, it is supposed that these parties should accept resorting to the peaceful track with the commitment to the cease-fire and the non-escalation. Here I talk about all the parties not certain parties and the priority here will be to stop the bloodshed and through sitting together around the negotiation table, we should try to reach a peaceful settlement that meets the hopes and ambitions of the people, and ensures to get out of the dilemma the three parties and the Arab nation suffer from.
