Macedonian President: Fight against terrorism must not limit human rights
Published in Albawaba on 14 - 01 - 2017

States should fight against terrorism and extremism in a manner that complies with the human rights and freedoms President 'Gjorge Ivanov' told a high-level forum in Cairo on Saturday, Macedonia Information Agency reported.
The reported quoted him at the forum, organized by the Alexandria Library and the 'Nizami Ganjavi' International Center, saying: "Since the onset of this millennium the free world has been fighting global terrorism, but due to the lack of international organizations' solution to growing threats, the internationalism is retreating as the nationalism is on the rise."
While fighting against terrorism and extremism, a modern country has been expanding its authorities and thus narrowing the room of human rights and freedoms, Ivanov said at the forum's session 'Democratic Security in Times of Extremism and Violence'.
Macedonia, he said, was the first country in Europe to declare a state of emergency over the wave of illegal migration and to deploy its army along the border, but it has never used it to expand the state authorities and restrict the human rights, including the ones of migrants.
In such conditions it seems that democracy is not sufficiently capable to provide for safety and security, Ivanov said.
Therefore, he added, a new modus is necessary for maintaining security and respecting the human rights. Ideas and programs for counter radicalization are necessary as military technologies are not sufficient for fighting terrorism, the Macedonian President said.
He also underlined the need of overcoming the double standards and selective approach of media, which have been exploiting the terrorist attacks in Europe.
Furthermore, he pinpointed the need of fair economic system, sustainable and inclusive social order.
During his visit to Egypt, Ivanov is also scheduled to meet Egypt's
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, his cabinet said in a press
release.
